You are like God when you comfort others.

You are like God when you comfort others.

The Comfort Zone often gets a bad rap and so today, I offer you…an Ode to Comfort.

Sometimes our culture (us!) act as if there is NEVER a need for help, or solace or rest. It’s fine for “those other people”, but us? No…we’re fine.  C’mon…admit it: a little part of you is relieved that a break is in sight, right?

Yes, there’s a time for stretching beyond the norm, reaching for the highest star, pursuing life with gusto!  There’s also time for doing less, choosing quiet more often and waiting for pain to pass. This includes doing the hard work of resting while healing begins.

When we can finally let ourselves rest (and not feel guilty for needing to make time for it to happen!), we find the sweet pleasure of accepting peace in the midst of chaos, the great relief in discovering kindness in the face of pain and a renewed sense of awe in the light of a new day.

So, here’s to those brave souls who choose to move toward health and wholeness by doing less!  To those courageous souls who are recuperating from life’s woes, I salute you!  Know that you are investing in future growth and one of life’s great gifts : discovering that your pain, your loss, your weariness… is not wasted because before you know it, you’ll get to comfort others.  And you’re in good company.

Consider this Bible passage from Apostle Paul:

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

So, receive comfort as a gift from God…and pass it on.  You will provide the unequaled validation that comes from someone who has experienced similar things.   You will bring the fresh winds of courage into flagging sails.

Let JJ Heller sing to you and let you know you’re not alone “when you’re world is shaking…” Let the comfort come in…
